Your first appointment:
room for your questions.
You do not need a perfect explanation or a diagnosis before meeting your psychologist.
Bring what you have
Useful information may include your referral, claim number, insurer contact, any treatment authorisation and details of other care. Let intake know when something is still being organised. Do not send sensitive paperwork through an unsecured general enquiry channel.
What might you talk about?
The first conversation can cover what has changed, what feels difficult now, current support and what you would like help with. You can ask why a question is being asked and discuss how to pace a difficult topic.
A goal might be connected to travel, relationships, daily routines, confidence or work. The plan should make sense in your own life, not just on a form.
Questions you can bring
- How will we decide what to work on?
- What information may be shared with my GP or insurer?
- How do I ask about a different approach or practitioner?
- What is covered and what may cost extra?
- What happens if I cannot attend?
Make attending easier
Tell the team about stairs, mobility, transport, language or sensory requirements before booking. Ask about telehealth when travel is difficult; suitability and funding need to be checked.
