For clients & referrers

Treatment requests:
what happens next?

A treatment plan, a request for funding and an insurer decision are connected, but they are not the same thing.

What is an AHTR?

AHTR stands for Allied Health Treatment Request. It provides a way for the treating professional to communicate an assessment of needs, the proposed care and relevant goals to the insurer. SIRA provides the current form and guidance.

Your psychologist can explain what information is included and discuss the goals with you. Submitting a request is not itself confirmation that the insurer will fund all proposed services.

Planning ongoing appointments

Before another course of care is arranged, clarify the current funding position. Tell the team about any new decision or change in your claim contact, and ask what still needs to be resolved.

The plan can be reviewed as circumstances change. A review should consider what is helping, what remains difficult and whether the approach or other supports need to change.

Information that can help a referral

  • The reason for referral and the clinical question.
  • Relevant treating-team contacts and consent arrangements.
  • Claim and insurer details, if applicable.
  • Existing decisions about treatment funding.
  • Access requirements and preferred location.

A treating report, case conference or independent assessment may require separate scope and fee arrangements. Please discuss these before assuming they are part of a therapy session.

Use the current form

Use SIRA's current AHTR resources rather than an old locally saved form. Questions about a particular funding decision should go to the insurer; clinical planning questions can be discussed with the treating practitioner.
